Where are leukocytes found? How many types of leukocytes are there; what role do leukocytes play in the body?
Leukocytes are found in both blood and lymph. There are two main types of leukocytes produced either in both red bone marrow or lymphoid tissues. The different types of leukocytes all help the body fight disease and infection. Phagocytic leukocytes, capable of amoeboid movement, engulf and destroy damaged tissue cells and invading cells such as bacteria. Some leukocytes release enzymes which disrupt invading cells' membranes, thus, destroying the invaders. Lymphocytic leukocytes destroy foreign substances called antigens by making substances, called antibodies, capable of deactivating the invading antigens.
